Diamonds, dug by hand
The Big Hole
Digging began in 1871. By the time mining ended in 1914, thousands of prospectors with picks and shovels had created the largest hand-dug excavation in the world — 215 metres deep — and recovered 2,722 kilograms of diamonds.

Kimberley Mine Museum
The Big Hole complex brings together the Old Town, a diamond display and a viewing platform above the hole, so the story of Kimberley’s diamond rush can be walked through rather than read.
